Lucy Margaux: Back With A Rare Vintage But These Natural Wines Won't Wait - Vyne

If you don't already know, Lucy Margaux is not the winemaker's name. Anton Van Klopper, the guy behind the well-known Lucy Margaux wine(s), has successfully made Lucy Margaux the forefront of Australia's natural wine brand scene.

The very artistic and unconventional-looking label design could be an indication of Anton's seriousness about crafting his works of "art" from start to finish, which is essentially the wine itself. Simply speaking, "natural wine is wine made solely from grapes," Anton explains. He believes that in the production of natural wines, less is more, and there should be no greed or control. For him, it's about cultivating his fruit organically and developing a relationship with the vines. Anything that interferes with nature's work is not natural, including filtration, fining, adding, and even little levels of sulfur.

When faced with hazards such as volatile acidity, mousiness, brettanomyces, or lactic acid bacteria fermentation during winemaking, he views them as a learning opportunity to improve his ability to align with nature's ways. This is why, when Vyne received our inaugural shipment from Lucy Margaux, most bottles sold out in less than a week — though that was expected.

Almost three years later, we are fortunate to once again have access to Lucy Margaux's 2023 vintage. According to the producer, "This vintage was one of the coolest in a long time." We picked three weeks later than usual, with our last pick in May. It's nice to have a blessed vintage, even if it was a touch lean."

The wines are predicted to be far better than usual due to the cool vintage and the team's meticulous handling of the harvest. This also puts them on track for an even stronger 2024 vintage, which is a continual journey for Anton, his harvest, and Lucy Margaux.

We do not mean to be dramatic, but these wines will not wait for anyone, and there will be no restocking. So, if you appreciate the vision behind these bottles, grab a handful that have been on your mind right now, and join us on this adventure with Lucy Margaux.
